Homework

Homework is essential for several reasons.

  • It encourages students to develop investigative skills, to use their initiative and to be more independent in their learning
  • It enables students to consolidate and extend what they have learned in the classroom
  • It gives students an opportunity to talk about their schoolwork with their families
  • It enables students to check their own progress

Teachers will set students homework for every subject every week. Parents and carers should treat statements from their children such as "I don't have any homework" with extreme scepticism.

Teachers will follow a schedule designed to ensure that the amount of homework students receive remains manageable. The frequency with which subjects set homework will reflect their weighting in the school curriculum.

We recommend that students in Year 7 build up from roughly 20 minutes per subject per night. This will increase gradually to a maximum of 1.5 hours of homework per night in Year 9. Families are likely to find that students do better if they establish a settled routine based on working at the same time and in the same place every evening rather than trying to complete everything in one marathon study session at the weekend. Students' planners will provide a clear guide regarding homework set and when it is due.

Most homework will be posted on the school's VLE.  Through the VLE, pupils can access revision materials, quizzes and tasks relevant to their year and subject. Homework will not normally be done during lesson time but may be completed under supervised conditions in a 'Homework club' after the end of the conventional school day.
