The Charter School

East Dulwich

Building our new school

Our new school site

The Charter School East Dulwich will be permanently based on the major part of the site on East Dulwich Grove previously occupied by the East Dulwich Community Hospital. The site is subject to a multi-million pound regeneration project in order to produce a state-of-the-art learning facility. A smaller part of the site will be occupied by a community health centre.

Moving in

Students starting in September 2018 will join our current students in our temporary site on Southampton Way which we have occupied since September 2016. We anticipate that we will move into permanent school buildings on the hospital site in January 2019.

This will include the vast majority of teaching spaces, including specialist facilities designed for the study of subjects like science, design technology, art and design and physical education to A'level. We expect to acquire more of the site for the development of outside sports facilities during 2019-20. The entire  site will be fully renovated and given over exclusively to school use by September 2021.

Design principles

In January 2016, the Trust appointed FCB Studios, one of the country's best-respected and most experienced architectural practices working in education, to design our new school.

Our architects have collaborated closely with the Head Teacher, governors and the Trust to develop a superb concept for the whole site. The design of the new school buildings will continue to be carried out in close collaboration with our founding cohort of families and the wider community. Design boards and plans to date have been shared with our stakeholders at pre-application consultation events over summer 2016 and can be viewed on the Regeneration section of the Southwark website at

The design adheres to the following principles:

  • The cultivation of useable outdoor space and the creation of a ‘campus’ feel
  • The creation of healthy spaces for work and play, including the maximal use of natural light and good acoustics
  • The provision of technology to enhance learning throughout the school site
  • The enhancement of the local community through sympathetic and environmentally responsible design

Short-term accommodation

The images included on this page are illustrative of these design principles rather than formal plans for the new school. Plans will be made available to the local community as they become available.

The Charter School East Dulwich will be based in temporary accommodation at Southampton Way until 2018.
